Rose and her daughter in front of snack stand at the tourist mall. TentMaker Profile: Rose Namatou

If you are ever a tourist in downtown Kampala, Uganda, be sure to see the outdoor handicraft mall. A zebra-striped booth stands out from the rest and offers ice-cold soft drinks and other snacks. Rose, the proprietor, is a member of First Presbyterian church in Kampala and supports herself and her three children with this little store. In the year 2000, she received a loan through The TentMaker Project which she used to buy a refrigerator so that she could sell cold drinks. After repaying that loan, she got another loan in 2004 to add some lunch fare to her menu. As the business has grown, she has been able to tithe to her church, pay school fees for her children, and even save towards building a house on the land she owns.
